Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge particular calls made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
